Great post. I'm not an extension developer, but I see this attempt to reduce complexity by adding a (incomplete) layer (of more complexity) pretty much in any development. I'm a big fan of fix-the-context-we-already-have.

@Adam

Yes, skinning Firefox is not for the weak. However a wallpaper exchanger is not better than what we have now.

Those who have learned about the Skinning process has created a monumental amount of original looks for Firefox over the years. The current Personas system is just not capable of duplicating that same freedom at this point in time and no way should it even be though of to replace the current method until its brought up to speed.

I agree about personas... its a wallpaper.... though it is better then nothing.

Skins have been around on Mozilla things since like suite milestone 16 or before... but they always broke and were poorly maintained.

Also a skinning Creator/app never really came out, so skins were always a long drawn out coding mess.

I would point to the AMO developer hub - https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/developers

as well as Getting Started - https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/developers/docs/how-to/getting-started

I'm not saying there isn't a learning curve - just that Jetpack has a learning curve as well.

For all the people who say writing XUL-based extensions is easy to learn, please point me to the excellent docs or books on doing so. Personally, I've found the documentation on it to be really not great and I just shelved the project of learning to write extensions as not being worth my time right now.

I couldn't' agree more. Mozilla has gone crazy and this will be the death of Firefox if not stopped. We need a revolt, and we need it now!
