What Is Your Message?

A few months ago, I had lunch with Thom Singer*. Thom’s an author and speaker and a really great guy. I met with him because I really enjoy public speaking and I wanted to talk to him about what it takes to be a professional speaker. We had a great lunch and a great conversation. In the end though, I decided that a career as a public speaker wasn’t for me right now. The reason was because of one specific thing Thom said.

He said that all great speakers have a message that they have to tell the world. They write about it. They speak about it. They shout it from the rooftops. I think about speakers I love like Zig Ziglar and his focus on goal setting. Or Dave Ramsey talking about getting out of debt.

You see, when you find your message, you have to tell the world. You have to write a book. You have to speak to people. You have to shout it from the rooftops. And I haven’t found that message yet.

So until I figure out what that message is for me, I’m going to stick to speaking on the side, at my church and as part of my job.

But I’m going to keep looking. Because I know there is a message in me waiting to come out.

What about you? Have you found a message you need to share with the world?
